NHS General Practitioner (GP) Guide
Registering with or switching your NHS GP practice is free, open to anyone residing in the UK, and streamlined via the NHS App and online digital forms.ViscaCare
1. Important Rules & Eligibility
- No ID or Fixed Address Required: NHS policy strictly states that proof of address, photo ID, and proof of immigration status are NOT legally required to register. If you lack a permanent residence, you can use a temporary address, a friend’s address, or the GP surgery’s address.ViscaCare +1
- NHS Number: If you have an NHS number, it speeds up record transfers, but it is not mandatory to register.
- No Need to Inform Your Old GP: When switching practices, your existing GP is automatically notified and your medical records are requested electronically—you do not need to contact your old surgery.NHS
2. Step-by-Step Registration & Switching Process
1.Find Local GP Practices:Check catchments and services.
Search the Find a GP tool on the official NHS website (nhs.uk) or in the NHS App using your postcode. Compare nearby practices by patient ratings, opening hours, and online consultation options.
2.Submit Your Registration Application:Online or in person.
Choose your preferred registration method:
- Via NHS App: Go to Profile > Your GP surgery > Change GP surgery, search your postcode, and complete the ~15-minute form.
- Via NHS Website: Use the national Register with a GP surgery service on
nhs.uk. - In Person / Paper Form: Visit the surgery reception to request a GMS1 registration form or download it directly from the NHS site.
3.Confirmation & Record Transfer:Usually takes 2–5 working days.
The surgery processes your application (typically within 5 working days). Once registered, primary medical records transfer automatically in the background, though full historic paper records may take a few weeks.
4.New Patient Health Check:Optional baseline assessment.
Many practices offer a short appointment with a practice nurse or healthcare assistant to check blood pressure, height/weight, existing prescriptions, and medical history.
3. Special Scenarios & Considerations
- Out-of-Area Registration: You can request to register with a practice outside your local catchment (for instance, near your workplace). However, out-of-area practices are not required to provide home visits or out-of-hours care.
- Temporary Registration: If you are staying away from home for more than 24 hours but less than 3 months (e.g., short-term work or stay), you can register as a temporary resident without losing your primary GP.
- Registering Children or Family: One adult can complete registration forms for dependent children or family members. For children under 16, practices may ask for proof of relationship or birth certificates if available.
